Gap Inc. has named Nancy Green as president and CEO of Old Navy.

Green, who will also serve on the senior leadership team, was previously president and chief creative officer of the brand and had served as its interim head since March.

Green has a deep history with Old Navy and its Gap Inc. parent, which is the No. 24 retailer on this year’s Top 100 Retailers ranking. She got her start there as an associate merchandise manager in 1988, working her way up to senior VP women's merchandising and global merchandising.

She then spent several years as general manager and executive VP of the Pottery Barn division of Williams-Sonoma and also served as CEO of lifestyle brand Shabby Chic.

Green rejoined Gap as executive VP, head of new business development in 2009 and held a series of Old Navy leadership roles before moving into its Athleta brand, serving as president and CEO.

She returned to lead Old Navy, which is Gap Inc.’s largest brand, in August 2019.

Sonia Syngal, Gap Inc. CEO, called Green a visionary leader who “brings deep customer empathy to her role every day.”

“Under Nancy’s purpose-led leadership, the brand has grown a formidable billion-dollar active and fleece business, launched new omnichannel experiences, and doubled down on Old Navy’s promise to welcome everyone through fun, fashion, family and value,” Gyngal added. “I look forward to watching her and the team further grow the brand and its social impact at a time when it matters most.”

“I’m thrilled to lead Old Navy — a brand that serves millions of customers with strong values that plays an important role in serving the needs of millions of families and communities,” said Green. “Old Navy has always stood for the democracy of style, and we have the unique ability and scale to bring that mission to life in how we deliver new product, experiences and style to customers of all sizes, shapes and backgrounds. I am so proud to have the opportunity to lead this team into the future.”

Green also serves on the board of directors for Allbirds.
