Nutrisystem Expands into Retail with Walmart

Nutrisystem, Inc., the No. 1 home delivery weight-loss company, is taking a major step to grow its retail presence with a new Walmart partnership. The company is now offering a 5-Day Nutrisystem Jumpstart Your Weight Loss Kit exclusively at nearly 2,000 Walmart stores.

As of March 2012, Nutrisystem generates 96 percent of its revenue selling prepared meals and grocery items that are sent directly to consumers throughout the United States (98% of sales) and Canada (2%). But across all sales channels, Nutrisystem logged revenue declines, from $509.5 million in 2010 to $401.4 million in 2011, due to lower than average sales prices and fewer customer starts. The announced retail push is speculated to be the company's much-needed attempt to reach pre-recession revenue numbers.

The new 5-Day Nutrisystem Jumpstart Your Weight Loss Kit, including 15 entrees plus desserts, a free meal planner and program guide with access to free weight loss counseling, can be purchased in-store for $44.98. There is also a 5-Day Nutrisystem kit designed for people losing weight to help manage their diabetes available in the pharmacy section of select stores.
