Beam Suntory is going greener for its iconic green Laphroaig scotch whisky bottle.
The company has refreshed the design with one said to be more sustainable design, which the company said will reduce its CO2 emission by 30%, in turn supporting its Proof Positive sustainability strategy to achieve net zero carbon emissions across its value chain by 2040.
The new design keeps Laphroaig’s signature green bottle design with black and white accents but replaces the plastic bar top with a beech wood alternative. The secondary packaging will also be substituted with a more recycling-friendly carton.
The packaging will also introduce new details that include embossed Laphroaig lettering on the side, as well as renaming "select" to "oak select" as a nod to the role of casks in the whisky's flavor profile. There will be no change to the actual whisky itself.
“This new packaging is a good step forward in our global sustainability ambitions while still maintaining Laphroaig’s true character and exceptionally high quality,” said Chris Richardson, VP, global scotch and Irish brands at Beam Suntory, in a statement.
Green Packaging Progression
Other major consumer goods companies have invested in sustainable packaging with the goal of helping reduce their environmental footprint and greenhouse gas emissions.
Kraft Heinz recently announced they were updating their sustainable packaging goals to include the reduction of virgin plastics by 20% by 2030. They also tested a paper-based bottle using sustainably sourced wood pulp for their iconic ketchup bottle.
Pernod Ricard tested single-mold paper-based bottles in the U.K. for their Absolut Vodka brand, made of 57% paper with an integrated barrier of recyclable plastic. Nestle also piloted paper-wrapped versions of their popular KitKat chocolate bars throughout Australia, with a quarter of a million bars made available, building upon their recyclable packaging for their Smarties candy and Quality Street candies that debuted in 2022.
