NielsenIQ has launched an on-shelf availability (OSA) barometer in the United States.
The OSA barometer is designed to enable retailers to measure and benchmark out-of-stocks to prevent supply chain disruptions and maintain on-shelf availability. It also intends to help them determine their competitive position in order to strengthen their distribution and preserve revenue.
The tech merges NielsenIQ data with advanced technology-driven analysis to predict where and when out-of-stocks will happen. It also lets retailers review the out-of-stock impact on sales across brands, categories, and stores.

NielsenIQ said 7.4% of CPG sales weren’t realized due to out-of-stock/out-of-shelf items in 2021, costing retailers $82 billion, and Jean-Baptiste Delabre, VP, retail analytics, NielsenIQ, noted that the ability for retailers to identify risks as a result of out-of-stocks will not only help their sales but also increase consumer satisfaction and loyalty.
“By identifying out-of-shelf products at the most granular level, retailers now have the ability to identify and quantify lost sales, prioritize opportunities, and execute on the root causes of out-of-stock products across the supply chain,” said Delabre.
