Today's consumer demands require both retailers and consumer goods companies operate at a pace that would make SpaceX blush. Unfortunately for everyone, the fragility of the supply chain has been drastically exposed, making it more difficult than ever to meet these lofty expectations.

For both sellers and suppliers, having a technology infrastructure that can grow as business and customer needs change over time has become paramount for survival. Unfortunately, too many companies remain saddled with legacy systems that can hamper progress while the competition rockets ahead.

Consumer brands have had their resiliency tested at unmatched levels, and it’s apparent that the ones most likely to survive and thrive are not only those able to leverage the benefits of technology, but also those with crystal-clear visibility into what their customers want.

As more businesses reconcile the fact they don’t have the systems to support new inventory situations or constrained supply situations, Annie Graziani, Sunrise Technologies senior director of marketing, tells CGT and RIS, many have struggled with an ability to understand the imbalance for how inventory positions affected the way that they were able to get that product distributed to the customers.

Learning about that customer includes remembering why they're loyal to your brand or company, she notes, while ensuring you can deliver on those expectations is more critical than ever.

For many companies, this has resulted in a struggle with their supply chains, adds Mike Pereira, Sunrise Technologies global VP. And while this may translate in different ways, what’s consistent is the need for both retailers and consumer goods companies to have access to the data needed to proactively steer their ship in the right direction.

This can be a problem for those still relying upon legacy systems, as their disparate nature are not conducive to progress. While brands and retailers may have access to a wealth of data, it’s often locked in silos that slow down its relevancy once accessible. As a result, disconnected legacy systems can hamper a company’s ability to surface insights from large amounts of data culled across various channels.

What’s more, security vulnerability can arise when systems become out of support, Pereira adds, as can increased costs from maintaining them.
