PepsiCo, Mars, TerraCycle Partner for Packaging Innovation

Mars, Incorporated's five business segments -- Chocolate, Petcare, Wrigley, Food, and Drinks -- and upcycling company TerraCycle announce TerraCycle's largest-ever corporate partnership.

TerraCycle will produce affordable, high-quality consumer goods by repurposing surplus and used packaging from more than 20 Mars brands, including: leading confectionary brands such as M&M'S, SNICKERS, MILKY WAY, TWIX, STARBURST, SKITTLES, among many others.

Richard Ware, vice president of Supply Chain, R&D and Sustainability at Mars, says, "We at Mars take very seriously our responsibility to uphold our efficiency principle and cut waste. This partnership with TerraCycle demonstrates Mars's ongoing commitment to making a difference by reducing the impact of our manufacturing plants on the planet each year."

Frito-Lay North America, a division of PepsiCo, also announces a new partnership with TerraCycle that will take used packaging from Frito-Lay snack products and turn them into affordable, quality goods.

"Consumers interact everyday with our company and our brands through packaging," says Gannon Jones, vice president, portfolio marketing, Frito-Lay North America. "The TerraCycle program builds on our existing efforts to minimize the impact of packaging, while also engaging and rewarding our consumers for being part of the solution."

Over the past few years, the company's packaging initiatives have made some significant strides. This includes reducing the amount of plastic in packaging by 10 percent and over the last five years eliminating 12 million pounds of materials used to make the snack bags. This month, the company announced that in 2010 its SunChips brand will be introducing a fully compostable bag made from plant-based renewable material. Marking the company's latest effort, Frito-Lay will be the first snack food company to fund the collection and upcycling of its used packaging.
