German Optics Maker Upgrades Its E-Commerce Chops

Zeiss Consumer Products, an international manufacturer operating in the optics and optoelectronics industries, has selected e-commerce and financial management services from ModusLink to optimize its order management, fulfillment, returns and payment processes. The goal is a new buying and returns experience for its shoppers.

In 2006, Zeiss opened its online store, but as e-commerce gains popularity and digital storefronts become a growing priority, the company decided it was time to give the digital offering a facelift. These efforts required a partner that could create a seamless interface between the online shop’s back-end system and what were antiquated order management and payment systems. Zeiss selected ModusLink because of its ability to combine robust financial management with fully integrated e-commerce and supply chain processes for an optimized approach to channel expansion.

ModusLink’s comprehensive end-to-end solution is fully integrated with global payment, CRM and fulfillment systems, allowing Zeiss to expand into new regions and countries. ModusLink's international footprint and ability to manage international currency conversions and localize shipping allows Zeiss to expand geographically while simultaneously scaling its online sales channel. Additionally, ModusLink provides comprehensive risk management and fraud protection along with customized monitoring and full compliance capabilities.

"With our digital presence becoming a growing force for the company's ongoing success, it was crucial for Zeiss to create a seamless customer experience by optimizing order management and payment processes," said Heiko Bittner, project coordinator for digital sales at Zeiss. "We ultimately selected ModusLink for its ability to offer streamlined back-end functionality to ensure a positive experience for [shoppers].

"As the Internet continues to upend the traditional supply chain, companies need help navigating this seismic shift in how they must operate as they move increasingly to a direct-to-consumer model," said Michel Da Silva, general manager of e-business at ModusLink.

Headquartered in Oberkochen, Germany, the Zeiss Consumer Products Division is part of the Zeiss Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Carl Zeiss Foundation. It is divided into four segments: research & quality technology, medical technology, vision care/consumer products (including high-end binoculars) and semiconductor manufacturing technology. Founded in 1846, the company had $5.8 billion in total revenue in fiscal 2016. Zeiss Group conducts business in more than 40 countries and has over 50 sales and service locations, 30 manufacturing sites and about 25 research and development centers around the world.

ModusLink Corp. is a wholly owned subsidiary of ModusLink Global Solutions, a global omnichannel technology and fulfillment provider.
