10 Very Innovative Product Must Haves
The Good Housekeeping Research Institute tested thousands of products for its third annual VIP Awards -- “Very Innovative Product” that is.
Not surprisingly, the iPad made the annual list of 10, but the wildly popular tablet was joined by a few less obvious choices. Plus, find out which 1946 household staple took home the Hall of Fame award.
The 10 VIP Award Winners
Method Laundry Detergent: Four pumps of the eight-times-concentrated formula are all you need for a medium load. The compact container is perfectly portable — and better for the environment because it uses less plastic.
Dyson Air Multiplier: This sleek, bladeless electric fan isn't only a cool conversation starter; its unique design makes it child-safe (no places for small fingers to get caught) and super-easy to clean.
HTC Evo 4G from Sprint: Smartphones got even speedier with the introduction of the Evo, the first U.S. phone to use a 4G network for Internet speeds that rival a home DSL's and are up to 10 times faster than standard 3G.
Goody Spin Pin: With the average woman spending more than 20 minutes every morning on her hair, even a little time-saving helps a lot. Testers raved that these mane tamers were invisible when anchored in hair and were a cinch to put in.
Sunbeam Convertible Iron and Steamer: This iron converts to a handheld steamer with the turn of a dial (the hot iron soleplate, when detached, rests on a heatproof trivet, so there's no need to wait for cooling to make the switch).
Zoku Quick Pop Maker: The Zoku lets you create your own ice pops from good-for-you ingredients like 100 percent fruit juice and pureed fruit in under 10 minutes.
Apple iPad with Wi-Fi and 3G: Within weeks of its introduction, tens of thousands of apps had been developed for it — with more being launched on a daily basis.
Coleman Instant Tent: Camping just got a lot easier. Good Housekeeping Research Institute testers were able to set up this roomy eight-person tent in under three minutes; dismantling took just 10.
Evolution Robotics Mint Floor Cleaner: This self-propelled robot moves back and forth and all around bare floors, sweeping or mopping with any dry or wet disposable cleaning cloth or reusable microfiber cloth.
GE Profile Frontload Steam Washer with Overnight Ready Cycle: The Overnight Ready feature on this GE appliance washes up to eight garments, then tumble- and fan-dries them so they can be worn the next morning — without your having to transfer them to the dryer.
Hall of Fame Award
Each year, Good Housekeeping readers vote for the product that had become a must have. Last year, P&G Swiffer Sweeper took home this coveted award. This year, they named Tupperware, introduced in 1946, as the winner.
“After the birth of the Tupperware party in 1948, sales took off, and the American pantry and fridge were transformed,” says the Good Housekeeping article. “Today, the line includes everything from cook's tools to cutlery to, yes, the classic storage containers — and can still be purchased at parties (and online).”
