Supermarket Expert Reveals Retailing Mega Trends
With the ever-changing retail landscape, it’s important for consumer goods companies to keep up with evolving consumer insights in order to stay competitive. Recently, the FMI released a new report that they feel embodies some of the mega trends that will shape the competition in grocery retailing over the next few years. Phil Lempert, also known as The Supermarket Guru, released a video discussing the key trends found in this report including what it means for the industry. Here is a snapshot of the trends Lempert discusses:
1. Shoppers adopted new value seeking habits during the recession, many of which they plan to maintain permanently.
2. Technology is changing how people shop for groceries on at least 25 percent of their shopping trips. Much of this activity is to discover value, use online coupons, use mobile devices and check prices online before heading to the store of their choice.
3. More than half of consumers buy groceries online at least occasionally, mostly in specific non-food categories.
4. Small stores, especially dollar and hard discount formats, are expanding rapidly.
