Shelfbucks Acquires Merchandising Technology Patents

Shelfbucks, Inc. has expanded its in-store measurement capabilities by acquiring 24 merchandising technology patents.

The patents cover technologies used to measure execution, compliance and performance of in-store merchandising displays, as well as monitoring in-store advertising conditions and shopper engagement.

The patents were originally granted to the former Goliath Solutions, a pioneer in using radio frequency-based technology platforms to prove the effectiveness of in-store merchandising and marketing in driving incremental sales and improving gross margin.

Gary Overhultz, a co-founder of Goliath and architect of the acquired patents, joined Shelfbucks last month as chief implementation officer.

Goliath, which operated from 2002 to 2013, incorporated radio technology directly into point-of-purchase displays and in-store marketing materials. The company worked with more than 100 consumer packaged goods brands and was installed in multiple retailers, most notably Walgreens.

Shelfbucks acquired the patents from Chicago-based equity firm CapX Partners, a significant investor in Goliath Solutions from its early days.

CPG and retail customers incorporate the Shelfbucks platform into POP materials, enabling continuous, daily reporting on display execution and location. Shelfbucks provides detailed insights on performance against marketing and sales goals.

Shelfbucks' technology also lets shoppers interact with merchandising materials via smartphones to access product information, promotional offers, ratings and reviews, and other relevant content.
