Amazon Makes Drone Delivery Official

The sky is not a delivery limit for Amazon.com, which made its first package drop by drone to a test customer near Cambridge, England earlier this month.

Fulfilling the "purchase," which included an Amazon Fire TV and a bag of popcorn, took 13 minutes from order-click to delivery. The company released a video tracking the process.

The Amazon Prime Air service is “designed to safely get packages to customers in 30 minutes or less using unmanned aerial vehicles,” according to the company. The service currently is in a test phase limited to daytime deliveries during suitable weather conditions.

The initial test involves only two customers receiving drone deliveries in the Cambridge area. Amazon hopes to expand to "dozens" of other locations near its British warehouse in the coming months and, later, grow to “hundreds” of destinations.

Other drone delivery hopefuls include Google parent Alphabet (through a similar project known as "Wing") and, reportedly, Walmart.
