In 2011, Japan Tobacco faced a challenging business environment, not only due to the global economic crisis, increasing regulatory pressure, tobacco excise tax hikes and industry contraction in a number of markets, but especially due to the Great East Japan Earthquake. The major lesson learned is the importance for it to expand its scope of anticipated contingencies. Its new management plan, starting in April 2012, is one piece of a three-year rolling plan (versus its previous three-year fixed plan) subject to annual updating.
