Hasbro Makes a Play for a Sustainable Supply Chain

8/6/2010
When it comes to corporate sustainability, Hasbro Inc. (www.hasbro.com) takes an all-encompassing approach: "Our main goals are to improve the performance of business operations; ensure that goods and services provided by suppliers are sustainable; and work with customers and sales channels to design sustainable products," says Denise Clark, CIO, Hasbro.

To support its newly re-engineered supply chain planning processes, the $4 billion manufacturer is executing a Global Planning project that will deliver a standard application for use across all markets. What's different about this supply chain project is that it has sustainability in mind.

The application will be developed using SAP's SCM (www.sap.com) and will replace five different planning systems. The overarching goal is to enable global visibility to critical supply chain information. But from a "green" standpoint, the project will eventually encompass the collection of sustainability data such as energy use, water use, and waste disposal/recycling. Plans are also in place to complete a regional distribution ship point model for U.S. domestic products and incorporate U.S. Environmental Protection Agency SmartWay or environmental evaluations in carrier bid packages.

"They key is to make sustainable development part of the business strategy from the start," closes Clark.
