Best Buy Nabs CVS Health’s Chief Digital Officer

By Jacqueline Barba - 06/04/2018

Former CVS Health chief digital and technology officer Brian Tilzer has moved on to consumer electronics retailer Best Buy.

Tilzer started in his new role as Best Buy’s chief digital officer last month, succeeding Bala Subramanian, who left the company after six years to join AT&T as chief digital officer. His new responsibilities include leading all of Best Buy’s information technology and digital operations to support the retailer’s Best Buy 2020 growth strategy.

Tilzer's appointment comes as Best Buy dips its feet in the health care arena, primarily focusing on aging adults.

“We already have sold a variety of health-related products and technology products designed for seniors, like specially design phones and medical alert systems. We are also testing a service, called Assured Living, to help the aging population stay healthy at home, with assistance from technology product and services. And we will continue to learn [as] we find our approach in this space,” said chief executive officer Hubert Joly during the company's most recent earnings call.

Tilzer’s experience at CVS Health gives him a background in consumer health and wellness needs that could help inform Best Buy's increased focus on healthcare. During his tenure at CVS, Tilzer led digital product management, user experience design, digital technology and operations and omnichannel customer experience across CVS Health’s retail pharmacy, Caremark, CVS Specialty and Minute Clinic businesses. Under his oversight, CVS joined forces with startup accelerator MassChallenge and digital health venture fund Rock Health in 2015 to drive faster innovation, develop connected health solutions and test initiatives such as mobile applications and personalized health products as it expanded further into digital health.

Prior to that, Tilzer held executive roles at Staples as vice president of global e-commerce and at Linen ‘n Things as senior vp of strategy and business development. He also spent 10 years with professional services company Accenture, where he helped Best Buy with several growth and performance-improvement programs.

CVS has not yet announced a replacement for Tilzer.
