Target Rolls Out 'Stranger Things' Merch

By Cyndi Loza - 10/24/2017

Target is stocking official merchandise from Netflix's Stranger Things in advance of the Oct. 27 premiere of the science-fiction horror series' second season.

The licensed products rolled out last week and span categories ranging from apparel to toys and board games to pens. The mass merchant's Stranger Thingsproduct lineup also includes exclusives such as:

  • A Blu-ray disk/DVD set of the first season of Stranger Things specially packaged to resemble a VHS tape.
  • A Kellogg Co.'s Eggo-branded card game, and themed Monopoly and Ouija board games from Hasbro.
  • Mugs communicating either "Hawkins Middle School" or "Never Forget" messages.
  • A figurine from Funko's Pop! that resembles series character Joyce Byers in a hazmat suit.

Exclusive figurines from Funko's 8-Bit Pop! depicting show characters Eleven, Mike, Lucas and Dustin will also roll out to Target stores in mid-November, according to a Funko blog post.

In stores, the products are stocked in-line, with select items in shelf trays. Target is also spotlighting the products with a target.com promotional page dedicated to the products and an "Eighties Things" page touting other '80s-themed SKUs including Eggo waffles, PepsiCo's Cap'n Crunch cereal and Coca-Cola Co.'s Tab. A video on Target's YouTube channel (see below), Facebook and Twitter updates, a feature in the retailer’s Oct. 15 circular, and a display ad within target.com also support.

Since the '80s-themed series is set in a fictional Indiana town, a Target store in Mishawaka, IN, hosted an Oct. 17 parking lot party to celebrate the merchandise launch. The event included show-inspired snacks, arcade games and a chance to win autographed souvenirs.

“Netflix and the wildly popular programs they create have become part of our culture and our guests’ everyday lives,” said Mark Tritton, Target executive vice president and chief merchandising officer, in a media release. “This unique partnership offers guests access to merchandise they’ll find only at Target, and while we’re getting started with Stranger Things, our plans to expand deeper into the Netflix lineup will provide guests with ongoing newness and even more reasons to shop with Target.”

In July, Target also began carrying a line of new products licensed from Netflix's animated children's series Beat Bugs.
