Petco Fishes Up a Cause
Petco tied in to the designation of June 8 as "World Oceans Day" by touting its contributions to aquaculture research and conservation efforts.
Petco regularly donates 1% of sales from all marine aquatic life to those causes, and raised that contribution to 10% from June 8-10. A feature in the chain's June 3 circular, a June 8 email blast and a June 9 Instagram update touted the promotion. The email linked to a page within petco.com that describes the retailer's commitment to selling fish, coral and algae bred in aquarium environments rather than collected from the ocean.
"As industry leaders with the strongest standards for animal health and welfare, we believe aquacultured aquatic life not only helps support the sustainability of marine species and their natural environments, it also helps preserve the oceans for future generations," Kevin Kohen, president of Petco's LiveAquaria subsidiary, said in a media release.
Petco also used the occasion to make a $20,000 donation to the Coral Restoration Foundation, which it promoted with a video released on YouTube on June 7. (See below.) Facebook and Twitter updates shared the video.
